These bears have been lovingly restored by our fundraising volunteers who have also been busy knitting outfits for them – as you can see in the images. More bears are also welcome so for more information please use our ‘Contact Us’ page.
The history of stuffed animals goes back a long way, some archaeological evidence suggests as far as Ancient Egypt. What is known for certain is that plush toys, as we know them first, started hitting the scene in the 1830s, but the most iconic of all of them, the Teddy Bear, came about in 1902. The story goes that American President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt was hunting and refused to shoot a baby bear that he came across.
Since that day the Teddy Bear has stood as the childhood toy that is given to almost every child. The term “Teddy” was even derived from the name of this self-same president. There are now millions of Teddy Bears produced every year, in a rainbow of styles and colours. No matter what your imagination may produce, there is sure to be a Teddy Bear that meets your idea of the perfect fuzzy protector.
Some celebrities who kept a Teddy Bear as their trusted companion:
* Sir John Betjeman, the Poet Laureate, had a bear called Archibald Ormsby Gore.
* Sir Max Hastings, Historian and Writer, had a bear called Brumas.
* Carol Vorderman and Janet Street Porter both had one eared bears – Bungee and Ted.
The Preloved Homeless Bears from OWL Cymru are helping bring their own safety message to our communities. Sheriff HUG, one of our crime prevention mascots, is leading this campaign with SuperGran. The Preloved Homeless Bears provide a ‘HUG’ when people are feeling low, depressed, or feeling anxious. Joseph Conrad said “Who knows what true loneliness is, not the conventional word but the naked terror? To the lonely themselves it wears a mask”
It was January this year, during the cold and dark nights, when The Homeless Preloved Bear campaign was formed. A member of the public contacted their local neighbourhood watch coordinator offering some bears that were no longer wanted and were heading for landfill.
